Emre Can remained on the bench as Germany began their Euro 2016 campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine on Sunday night.

Joachim Low’s side were good value for their victory and in Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos they had the game’s star performer.

It took the World Cup holders just 19 minutes to open the scoring when a superb cross from Kroos was brilliantly headed home by Shkodran Mustafi.

Jerome Boateng then produced a miraculous clearance to somehow keep out Yevhen Konoplyanka’s effort.

Substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger then came off the bench to make it 2-0 in stoppage time, after a superb assist by Mesut Ozil.

Can and Germany are back in Group C action on Thursday night when they face Poland in Paris.
