Emre Can's dream of Euro 2016 glory was ended at the semi-final stage as Germany suffered a 2-0 defeat to France in Marseille on Thursday evening.

The midfielder was the last remaining Liverpool player at the tournament but is heading home after Antoine Griezmann's double consigned the world champions to defeat.

Prior to Thursday's fixture, Can had yet to feature for the Germans in France, but injuries and suspensions offered the opportunity for the 22-year-old to start in midfield in the competition's biggest game so far.

He performed well alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in a game Germany dominated, but they were unable to make their extra possession count as France booked a final meeting with Portugal.
