Jürgen Klopp has called on Liverpool fans to make the additional 8,500 seats inside Anfield count this season as the Main Stand opens for the first time against Leicester City tonight.

The capacity of the club’s home has been increased to 54,074 following the expansion – and the boss is hoping more Reds inside the stadium will be beneficial to his team.

In his first programme notes of 2016-17, the boss wrote in ‘This is Anfield’: “Of course, we come into this game having already played four matches this season: three in the league and one in the League Cup competition.

“Our performances have been better than the current points total on the league table. I don’t think anyone who has seen our games would argue that we should have more points than four in this moment. But that is really the only disappointment so far.

“We know what to expect today. Leicester are not here to celebrate the opening of our new Main Stand – they are here to beat us and therefore we must be at our best.

“It has been great, during the summer, to meet our supporters across England, America and Germany. We have also had brilliant support in our opening away games.

“But there is something special about playing at home. It is even more special today because there are so many more supporters inside Anfield, wearing our colours, compared to last time we played here.

“This extra capacity only means something if we make it mean something. As the team, we know it is always for us to inspire you. But today, this special day, let’s make the ‘new’ Anfield something incredible and a place that feels instantly like a home where we will be successful.”
