As Liverpool prepare to contest their first home game of 2016-17, Jordan Henderson has spoken of his conviction that the current squad of players are capable of achieving success.

Writing in his programme notes for today’s clash with Leicester City, the captain explained why he has been left highly impressed by the commitment and desire of his teammates over the summer and into the season.

He said in ‘This is Anfield’: “You’d expect me to say it, of course, but we have a tremendous group of players and every single one of them is committed to working hard and winning for the supporters. The competition in the squad has never been stronger.

“Pre-season was very valuable and everyone worked hard and learned what the manager and his staff expect from us. We don’t want any congratulations for that – it’s how it should be and hard work and togetherness have been areas where the players have shown a real commitment over the summer.

“I’m not one for making promises, as I think actions are more important. But when I look in our dressing room, at the entire squad, I know we have a set of lads who understand what it means to play for Liverpool and want to do the very best we can for you each and every week.

“It’s great to be home again and on behalf of all the players I hope this season – both at Anfield and away from home – we can do you proud.”
