Joel Matip knew Sadio Mane was a good player before the pair became teammates at Liverpool this summer – but the defender has still been surprised by the talent of the August Player of the Month.
The Senegalese made an impression from the off this season, scoring a sensational solo goal and contributing much more as the Reds downed Arsenal 4-3 at Emirates Stadium.
Further encouraging displays followed at Burton Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, prompting fans to vote Mane the side’s star performer for the opening month of the campaign.
Matip knows only too well how devastating the forward can be in full flow, given he takes up the challenge of stopping him on a daily basis during training sessions at Melwood.
