'It's difficult to look for glasses without glasses!'
If Liverpool fans had any doubts that they would be in for a rollercoaster ride when Jürgen Klopp was appointed, the events of January 23, 2016 put those firmly to bed.
The Reds were facing Norwich City at Carrow Road and, having bounced back from 3-1 down to lead 4-3, looked set for an unlikely Premier League victory that would have been considered thrilling enough by most standards.
Sebastien Bassong had other ideas, though, and brought the Canaries level two minutes into added time with a brilliant left-footed strike, which appeared to have stolen a share of the spoils for the hosts.
But Liverpool were clearly keen to prove that the late show that had salvaged a draw against Arsenal at Anfield éarlier that month was the sort of drama that fans would have to get used to under Klopp.
Adam Lallana's 95th-minute volley sparked wild scenes in the away end, and prompted the manager to sprint onto the pitch, where he was mobbed by the goalscorer and the rest of the squad, breaking his glasses in the process.
Speaking after the game, the German revealed that it was not the first time his spectacles had taken a beating, and in typically humorous fashion.
"One [pair] is in the museum of Borussia Dortmund because we won for the first time against Bayern Munich and Nuri Sahin broke my first glasses. Today it was Adam, it's broken. Usually I have a second [pair] but until now I couldn't find it because it's really difficult to look for glasses without glasses! I'm not sure if anyone [at the Anfield museum] will ask for them but I will keep them and we'll see."
