Liverpool went into their home game against Chelsea in late March 2002 knowing that a win would take them top of the Premier League.

But a largely frustrating afternoon ensued at Anfield, with Gerard Houllier’s side - who looked lethargic after the emotional and physical exertion of their midweek Champions League win over Roma - subdued and the visitors creating the better chances.

Steven Gerrard being forced off with a groin injury shortly before the half-hour mark did little to raise home spirits, but it was the midfielder’s replacement Vladimir Smicer who proved to be Liverpool’s last-gasp saviour.

Attacking the Anfield Road end, Emile Heskey sent in an excellent cross from the left, and Smicer guided an unstoppable, side-footed volley beyond Carlo Cudicini to send the Reds a point clear of Manchester United at the top of the table.
