Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge made key contributions as England secured a 2-0 victory over Malta in a 2018 World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Saturday.

The Liverpool duo were in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up for the Group F meeting and duly combined to break the deadlock for the Three Lions.

Henderson whipped a superb cross into the area from the right channel on 29 minutes which Sturridge deftly redirected inches inside the opposite corner with his head.

The Reds captain was involved in his country’s next goal too, setting up fellow midfielder Dele Alli to find the net at the second attempt seven minutes before the break.

Sturridge was withdrawn in the 73rd minute while Henderson – an impressive performer throughout – completed the full game at the national stadium.

England play again on Tuesday night, when they take on Slovenia in Ljubliana.
