Video: That famous Saint-Etienne win 40 years on
On this day 40 years ago, David Fairclough wrote his 'Supersub' moniker into Anfield folklore with a dramatic winner against Saint-Etienne in front of the Kop.
In an atmosphere often described as the greatest ever seen at the famous ground, the striker secured a comeback win that paved the way for the club's first European Cup success.
After Bob Paisley's team had suffered a 1-0 defeat in the opening leg of their quarter-final tie in France, an expectant crowd of 55,043 packed into Anfield.
Kevin Keegan sent the home fans wild when he netted inside the opening two minutes, but a brilliant strike from Dominique Bathenay in the second half put the tie back in Saint-Etienne's favour.
Hopes of a turnaround for the hosts were sparked again when Ray Kennedy levelled the scores on 59 minutes - and then it was time for Fairclough.
With six minutes left on the clock, the flame-haired centre-forward ran through on goal and kept his composure to slot home the winner.
