Jürgen Klopp spoke about the thigh injury Adam Lallana sustained on international duty during his pre-Everton press conference at Melwood on Friday afternoon.

Asked at the start of the media briefing about a conversation with England manager Gareth Southgate this week, the Reds boss said: “I think it is absolutely normal to have contact with the national coach, the manager of the national team.

“So we are in kind of close contact because we met a few times already, and so that’s normal. I don’t think it’s about appreciating [it] or something, it’s about a normal situation; we both share players, not only with [each other]. [The phone call] is then a normal situation.

“I spoke already about it and of course I was not happy [with the injury]. I heard somebody said I was relaxed about the situation – I could not be less relaxed about this, but it is not about blaming Gareth Southgate. I know what you all want, to make stories about things like this, but you [the media] are in the boat also, so that’s how it is. It is always about fixtures, it is always about when do we play who and [it is] the players have to do the work. That’s OK, but sometimes things like this happen.

“I was not happy that he played on Wednesday, yes, but it is not my decision and I respect 100 per cent the decision of other managers because they have to respect my decisions too. He made the line-up and that’s it, and Adam loves football that much that he obviously didn’t say, ‘Maybe I should wait another day’.

“The problem is then in a situation like this – and it’s a problem of our job – is that they cannot only play on Wednesday, they have to train. You saw the game, against City it was quite intense, then [players have to] travel to wherever, then you have the Monday for kind of recovering, you bring all the players together and then on Tuesday you have to train with the team you want to play. [In this case] Adam travelled to Germany.

“We all can say they earn that much and all that stuff – and that’s true – but it doesn’t help in these situations. As I’ve said, we are not the only team in England and not the only country who suffered in this game. In this game against England, German players left the pitch with injuries and none of their club coaches are happy or something like this. That’s the problem.

“I really think we could handle these situations better if we worked all together. You [the broadcasters] are about the fixtures, so you say ‘You play here, you play there, you play here, you play there…’ I was never part of a meeting but I’m pretty sure when the broadcasters sit together there’s nobody who says, ‘Yes, but they played on Wednesday already, come on, don’t let them play [at] 12.30pm’ and whatever because [you] want to see this.

“As long as we do this, as long as we don’t work together, we will have these situations all the time – and not only in England. Now I’m here and we have it here also and that’s the situation.”
