2006-07: Maccabi Haifa
Liverpool's seventh European Cup final awaited in May 2007, but the first step on the Reds' journey to Athens proved to be anything but comfortable.
Rafa Benitez’s team were forced to come from behind to defeat Maccabi Haifa 2-1 in a nervy third qualifying round first leg at Anfield, with Craig Bellamy’s equaliser and Mark Gonzalez’s late winner ensuring they went into the second leg with a narrow lead to defend.
That match was played in Kiev due to safety and security concerns in Israel, and Peter Crouch netted in a tense 1-1 draw that saw the Reds edge through to the group stages.
