Ian Rush repeated his feat of 1986 by scoring twice against Everton as Liverpool won the FA Cup on an emotionally charged afternoon at Wembley.

Following the Hillsborough Disaster that tragically claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters, there were some doubts as to whether Kenny Dalglish's side would continue the 1988-89 season.

However, it was decided the Reds would continue and, after beating Nottingham Forest in the replayed semi-final, the stage was set for another Merseyside cup final at Wembley.

In soaring temperatures, the tone for an incredibly emotional day was set when Gerry Marsden arrived on the pitch pre-game to sing a spine-tingling version of You'll Never Walk Alone.

When the match got under way, John Aldridge scored after four minutes - his first strike in a red shirt against the Blues.

With victory just one minute away, Everton substitute Stuart McCall smashed home a loose ball in the box to force extra-time.

During the added period of play, Ian Rush, on for Aldridge, spun and finished past Neville Southall to make it 2-1 before McCall responded with a magnificent strike to make it 2-2.

It was left to Rush - who else? - to head the winner following a left-wing cross from John Barnes.
