The FA Cup was a trophy that had always eluded Liverpool prior to 1965.

But the stage was set for the Reds to end that run on May 1 of that year, as 100,000 spectators packed into Wembley to witness a fascinating clash between two charismatic managers in Bill Shankly and his Leeds United counterpart Don Revie.

Early into proceedings, Liverpool’s left-back Gerry Byrne clattered into Leeds' Bobby Collins and broke his collarbone. However, these were the days before substitutes were allowed and Byrne battled on bravely.

After a tough contest produced no goals during normal time, Shankly’s Reds took the lead in extra-time when Roger Hunt pounced to make it 1-0.

Leeds United got back on level terms when a brilliant strike from Scotland international Billy Bremner gave Tommy Lawrence absolutely no chance.

But Scotland star Ian St John became the hero as he met Ian Callaghan’s cross to head home a dramatic Wembley winner and hand Liverpool their first ever FA Cup.

It was a proud moment for the colossal Ron Yeats as he climbed the famous Wembley steps to become the first ever Liverpool captain to lift the FA Cup.
