Graeme Souness secured his only trophy as Liverpool manager as the Reds beat Sunderland at Wembley to lift the FA Cup in 1992.

Kopites had been rocked by the announcement that Souness would be missing from the dugout for the foreseeable future when he was admitted to hospital for major heart surgery after a semi-final meeting with Portsmouth at Highbury.

But, after Ronnie Moran guided the Reds past Pompey in a replay at Villa Park, it was time for a Wembley date against a Sunderland side who had impressed everybody on their run to the final.

Souness would be back in the Wembley dugout with the club doctor by his side while it was proud day for Boot Room legend Moran, who led the team out.

After a goalless first-half in which Malcolm Crosby's side had the better chances, a tactical switch saw Liverpool's fortunes take a turn for the better.

Steve McManaman, who had been out for a month with a cartilage problem, had replaced the injured John Barnes at Wembley, and when he moved to the right flank he tormented the Mackems.

McManaman set up Michael Thomas for the opener two minutes after the restart, as he repaid his debt for that goal in 1989 with a brilliant opening strike.

Ian Rush made certain of the victory on 67 minutes and Mark Wright climbed the famous steps to proudly lift the FA Cup.
