We recall the 1995 League Cup final when Steve McManaman scored two magnificent goals as the Reds edged out Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

Since taking sole charge after the turbulent reign of Graeme Souness, Roy Evans had changed Liverpool's fortunes for the better.

The goals of Robbie Fowler, coupled with the individual brilliance of McManaman and future captain Jamie Redknapp controlling the midfield, Liverpool had a team capable of challenging for major trophies.

Bolton, under Bruce Rioch, were a decent side and in future Red Jason McAteer and future Evertonian Alan Stubbs, they had two players who were highly sought after.

Once the action got under way it was Liverpool who opened the scoring on 37 minutes when McManaman netted after a brilliant solo run through the heart of the Bolton rearguard.

The Scouser scored again on 68 minutes with a stunning solo goal, running from almost inside his own half and then producing a delightful finish beyond the reach of Keith Brannagan.

And, though Alan Thompson pulled a stunning goal back for Rioch's men, it was to be Liverpool's day.

It was a proud moment for Ian Rush, who climbed the Wembley steps to pick up his only trophy as Liverpool captain.
