Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard received a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans after his final game against the Blues before heading to the United States to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy but said: "I was more happy with the ovation from the Liverpool fans."

With Chelsea starting this game as newly crowned Premier League champions it fell to Gerrard to lead the pre-match guard of honour as they took to the Stamford Bridge pitch. The skipper then did his best to ruin the party when he nodded in at the far post to cancel John Terry's opener.

Coutinho twice went close to finding the back of the net but, with Liverpool failing to find a winner, a top-four finish moved out of reach of Brendan Rodgers' side.
