Former Liverpool skipper Matt Busby, who played in that 5-2 triumph at Old Trafford, had transformed Manchester United following his appointment as manager in 1945 and his side were defending champions going into this clash.

But Bill Shankly's Liverpool, who had won the title in 1963-64 and 1965-66, swept aside United. George Best fired the hosts into a 1-0 lead after three minutes but Reds captain Ron Yeats equalised on nine minutes and Roger Hunt made it 2-1 eight minutes later.

Liverpool dominated and should have racked up "a cricket score", according to Yeats. It was still an impressive victory against a United side that just a few weeks later would become the first English club to win the European Cup.
