Liverpool had won at Molineux on the final day of the season almost 30 years earlier to snatch the title from league-leaders Wolves. In this sequel, the Reds required just a point to claim a record-breaking ninth championship, while the hosts needed victory to avoid relegation.

Wolves winger Steve Kindon scored after 13 minutes to put the hosts on course for a precious three points and, with a quarter of an hour to go, it looked like they might ruin the Reds' party. But Kevin Keegan struck with 14 minutes to go to settle the nerves and John Toshack and Ray Kennedy added a flourish to the scoreline late on.

The Reds had shown the character that had defined their season and pipped second-placed Queens Park Rangers by a point to secure the first trophy of what would be a glorious era under manager Bob Paisley.

A second piece of silverware would arrive just 15 days later when Liverpool completed a 4-3 aggregate victory over Belgian side Bruges to claim the UEFA Cup.
