Klopp's first moves suggest gradual approach
Jürgen Klopp arrives at Liverpool with high expectations, but those haven’t come to the Reds’ new manager in the form of immediate, standings-based targets.
Klopp revealed to German newspaper Bild on Monday that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group didn’t issue him specific demands about where the team must finish in the Premier League standings this season.
Instead, club bosses told Klopp to instill a style of play the public will be able to recognize as Liverpool’s own.
“I spoke to the people in charge of the club at length,” Klopp told Bild, according to Sky Sports. “(There are no targets for this season), just simply to play football with a recognizable brand.”
Klopp also demonstrated little concern about the size of his January 2016 transfer budget.
He’ll focus his energies on his current group of players and doesn’t plan to raid his previous club, Borussia Dortmund, for talent.
“Whether there is money to spend in January or not doesn’t interest me,” Klopp said.
“We are only in October, and I don’t even know how many games we’ve got until the transfer window opens, and therefore we will have a look at the players at our disposal first.
“I have no intention whatsoever to lure Dortmund’s stars to Liverpool.”
After a dazzling first-day introduction Friday, Klopp spent his second day on the job watching Liverpool’s U18 team defeat Stoke City at the Reds’ Kirkby Academy facilities.
Klopp apparently will look to strengthen Liverpool’s first team from within before scouring the market for outside talent.
Klopp’s early activities suggests he’ll build his team gradually, falling in line with the directives from above and his own plea for patience from the excited public.
