Gerrard holds talks with Klopp

And following talks with the new Reds manager, Gerrard will also meet the German in person on Sunday when Liverpool host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The former Reds captain saw his LA Galaxy side knocked out of the MLS play-offs by Seattle Sounders last week, and is set to return to England on Wednesday.

Gerrard will spend some time with his family in Liverpool and he will also appear as a pundit on BT Sport's Champions League coverage.

It is fitting that Gerrard is returning for the game against Palace, as Alan Pardew's side were the visitors the final time he played at Anfield for Liverpool in the Premier League. But he will hope for a better result than the 3-1 defeat they suffered on that day.

Gerrard has always made clear his desire to return to Liverpool in some capacity. When he originally announced his departure in January, he said: "It is my sincere hope and wish that one day I can return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club."

According to the Independent, Gerrard has also met several times with Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, who lives a few miles away from him in Beverley Hills. Werner has said himself in the past that: "Steven will always have a part to play for this club, as and when the time comes that he wishes to return."

Whether Gerrard could return to play on loan from LA Galaxy, however, remains to be seen.

He is currently due back at the MLS club on January 15 for pre-season training, but he would not be the first to delay his return date in order to make a short-term switch elsewhere.

David Beckham twice made moves from the club to play for AC Milan during his five-year career there, while Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan have also made similar switches to the Premier League in the past.

In an exclusive interview with Sportsmail in September, Gerrard revealed he had received offers to join two other clubs on loan, but ruled out a move in the short term.

"[I have] earned the right for a cold beer on Christmas Day with my family. Right now, the answer to your question is “no”, I won’t take up the loan offers but who knows what the future holds?"

However, he did reveal he missed representing Liverpool and playing in the Premier League.

"Yeah, I do miss it," he said. "I miss everything about it. When I switch on the TV and see the stadiums, with 50, 60, 70,000 people — the aggression, the intensity, the tension. I am jealous.

"I miss the build-up, competing with better players, I miss being Steven Gerrard, Liverpool captain and walking out in front of my people with that pressure and trying to get a result for them."

But he also admitted that he may not want to return to Liverpool as a player in the knowledge he would be unable to perform at the level he would demand from himself.

He added: 'In an ideal world, I wake up in the morning, I am 25, I’m Liverpool and England captain, we’ve just beaten West Ham and I’m preparing for the Euros, but you’ve got to let go.

"I'm not really sure how much more I could give the club at the level I'd like to give it. Going back to when I peaked from 23 to 30 years of age, the reality is that I'm getting too old for this level."

Last week, Gerrard intimated that he probably only has one year left of his career, making a potential loan return to Liverpool even less likely.

"It could be my last season as a footballer," he said. "I certainly don’t want to feel like I’m feeling right now come next year.

"I'd love to go out on a high. It's a long season, and I only came here for the last four months but I'll certainly be better for the experience next year."

While Gerrard touches down in England, Liverpool are set to arrive in Russia ahead of their Europa League clash against Rubin Kazan.

Klopp is set to name a largely unchanged team from the one which beat Chelsea in the Premier League last Sunday.
