Liverpool have made a 'lucrative offer' for Schalke defender Joel Matip, according to reports.

A source close to the club has told footballinsider247 that Liverpool have made an approach for the Cameroon international.

It's understood to be a big-money offer as the Reds are desperate to complete the deal for the centre-back by January.

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly 'sanctioned the move' and has been an admirer of the defender since his days at Borussia Dortmund.

And when asked by German newspaper Bild if he was planning to sign Matip last month, he hinted at a possible deal.

"Are we interested in Sane and Matip? They are Schalke players, right? It is correct that we are looking at all options," he said.

Matip is out of contract in the summer and is believed to be on the look-out for a new challenge after spending 16 years with Schalke from youth level.

And Klopp has already shown his intent to sign defenders this week, bringing in Queens Park Rangers' Steven Caulker on loan.

The 24-year-old came off the bench to make his debut for the Merseyside club in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Anfield yesterday.
