Liverpool are competing with Arsenal to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams ‒ the fastest player in La Liga.

Williams broke the record in Spain last season after being clocked at 22.2 miles per hour during a 1-1 draw with Deportivo in May.

The Spain U21 international has a £15million release clause in his contract and Jurgen Klopp has been keeping a close eye on the Bilbao-born 21-year-old.

Liverpool have a job on their hands to sign the starlet after Arsenal scouts were sent to Villarreal to watch Williams on Wednesday as he scored in a 1-0 away win in the Copa del Rey for Bilbao.

Arsene Wenger is a fan and is mulling over a January swoop for the youngster, though Bilbao do not want him to leave.

The La Liga club are pushing to make Williams sign a new deal and Sportsmail has been told they even want to raise his release clause to £76m in a move that would prove how highly they rate him.

Tottenham Hotspur were recently linked with Williams, given Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign a back-up striker for Harry Kane.

He can play across a front three in attack and Klopp sees Williams as an ideal option.

The impending transfer bans on Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid could also see the two clubs show an interest in Williams, making Liverpool's job harder.

He has six goals in 14 appearances in La Liga this season so far.
