Liverpool face battle to sign German midfielder
Liverpool face an uphill battle trying to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud this summer.
Boss Jurgen Klopp is a firm admirer of the highly-rated Germany U21 international, who has earned rave reviews during a breakthrough campaign in the Bundesliga.
However, Liverpool are one of a long list of clubs keen to secure his services, including the likes of Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United. He has also attracted interest in his homeland from Borussia Dortmund.
Gladbach have vowed to resist approaches to buy the talented 20-year-old, who has no release clause in a contract which runs until 2018.
“Dahoud is not for sale,” insisted Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl recently. “We are a hungry club and we need every good player."
An offer in excess of £25million could make the German outfit reassess but unless Liverpool win the Europa League they won't be able to offer him the prospect of Champions League football next season.
They would have to hope that the chance to play for Klopp – coupled with the fact he shares the same agent as Reds midfielder Emre Can – helps to swing the balance their way.
Dahoud has already graced the Champions League having caught the eye playing for Gladbach in this term's group stage against Man City, Juventus and Sevilla.
He's a box-to-box midfielder who has scored four goals and contributed eight assists in 37 appearances in all competitions this season.
Dahoud has climbed the ranks at Gladbach since joining their academy from Fortuna Dusseldorf in 2010.
He's the first Syria-born footballer to play in the Bundesliga and has been acclaimed for both his work-rate and his range of passing.
