Winger wanted by Reds boss
Liverpool target Dries Mertens seems set to end Jurgen Klopp's hopes of taking him to Anfield this summer.
The Napoli winger has attracted the Reds boss' attention despite a stop-start Serie A season.
In 33 appearances, 27 of which were from the substitutes bench, the Belgium international scored five goals and provided five assists.
Reports last month claim Klopp is planning a swoop for the 29-year-old.
However, CalcioMercato.it report Napoli have offered Mertens a new deal which will extend his stay in Italy until 2020.
He is also likely to receive a significant pay bump on his current £900,000-a-year (€1.2m) wages.
Liverpool are not thought to be the only Premier League side interested in Mertens, who Wolfsburg unsuccessfully bid £23m (€30m) for last summer.
Sky Sports claim Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is ready to offer him a move to the south coast as he adds depth to his squad ahead of next year’s Europa League campaign.
Mertens has picked up 44 caps since making his international debut in 2011, scoring eight goals.
He is in Marc Wilmots' Euro 2016 squad which will take on Italy, the Republic of Ireland and Sweden in Group E.
