Reds to go head-to-head with Blues for Witsel
Liverpool are set to go head-to-head with Everton over Axel Witsel – after their first-choice target Gregorz Krychowiak was snapped up by Paris Saint-Germain.
The Reds were in the running for defensive midfielder Krychowiak who impressed during Euro 2016 with a string of assured displays.
But he has decided to follow his coach – Unai Emery – from Seville to further his career with the wealthy French club.
That leaves Jurgen Klopp with a gap to fill – and Witsel is the next on his list.
The Zenit St Petersburg man had been interesting Everton – but, as revealed in Peoplesport last week, Ronald Koeman is also keen on Manchester United's Morgan Schneiderlin.
Ideally, the Dutchman would like the two men to sit in front of his back four.
But now that Klopp has joined the race those plans have been thrown up into the air, leaving Belgian international Witsel himself with a choice to make over his future.
