Merseyside clubs battle for Belgium international
Liverpool and Everton will go head-to-head in the race to sign Axel Witsel, according to reports.
The Zenit St Petersburg star has impressed at the Russian side ever since his move from Benfica in 2012.
And his performances have continued to attract attention from European clubs with his displays at Euro 2016, before Belgium were knocked out by Wales in the quarter-finals.
According to The Mirror, both Merseyside clubs are chasing his signature this summer.
Ronald Koeman is eager to recruit in his first summer in charge of the Toffees, while Jurgen Klopp is also on the lookout for midfield reinforcements.
The German had been keeping tabs on Polish star Gregorz Krychowiak but he has now reportedly agreed a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Witsel, 27, is keen on a move away from Zenit and now faces a tough decision on his next club with Liverpool and Everton both keen.
“I want to leave Zenit,” Witsel said last week.
“My future may be in Italy or England.
“It does not matter if I go to Serie A or the Premier League, if they're a great club.”
