Liverpool are considering handing former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger a one-year contract.

The 39-year-old shot-stopper is a free agent and he has been invited by manager Jürgen Klopp to link up with the Reds squad for pre-season training at Melwood.

Klopp wants to have three senior keepers this season and if the Austrian impresses and earns himself a permanent deal then he would be third choice behind new signing Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.

Manninger has been out of contract since he left FC Augsburg at the end of last season after a four-year spell in Germany.

After starting his career at SV Salzburg in his homeland, Manninger played for Grazer before Arsenal signed him for £500,000 as understudy to David Seaman in 1997.

He went on to make 64 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions and was part of their 1998 Double-winning squad.

Since leaving Arsenal, Manninger has played for Espanyol, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Red Bull Salzburg, Udinese, Juventus and Augsburg.
