Liverpool's Oxlade-Chamberlain pursuit going right to the wire
Liverpool’s pursuit of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to enter the final day of the transfer window, complicating the midfielder's England preparations.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is due to fly to Malta with the England squad on Thursday ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier, but it is possible his future will still need to be resolved.
Liverpool have opened talks with Arsenal in an attempt to secure the 24 year-old for a fee over £30 million. Chelsea have already had a £35 million offer accepted, but Oxlade-Chamberlain stalled as he waited to see if the Merseyside club made an official approach.
Now that has materialised it is simply a question of whether Liverpool will match Chelsea’s bid, or if Arsenal are prepared to do business with a club they perceive as more natural rivals for a Champions League place. It is believed the player would prefer Anfield.
Liverpool have been monitoring Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract situation all summer, but there is still work to be done to finalise a deal.
Should agreement be reached a medical will have to be organised at some point on Thursday, with the England base St George’s Park able to facilitate the examinations.
But the longer talks drag on, the more Oxlade-Chamberlain’s faces a race against time to take his seat on the plane with his international teammates when it leaves on Thursday afternoon.
