Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have been alerted to the news that Schalke are prepared to concede defeat in their efforts to keep Max Meyer.

The highly rated 22-year-old has spent his entire career to date with a club who nurtured him through their academy system.

Schalke had been hoping, after five years of senior football and close to 200 appearances, that an agreement could be reached to keep the Germany international on their books.

They have, however, been unable to open contract extension talks and are now reluctantly prepared to admit that a man being heavily linked with a move to England appears set to move on.

Schalke's Sporting Director Christian Heidel told reporters on Meyer’s future: "At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer. Everything suggests that.

"At the moment there is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again."

Meyer has refused to enter into discussions regarding fresh terms throughout the final 12 months of his current deal.

That has been a source of frustration for Schalke, with club president Clemens Tonnies recently revealing that the midfielder’s representatives cancelled the latest meeting to have been scheduled.

He said: “I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was cancelled by his agent on short notice.”

With there seemingly no deal to be done, Meyer will be able to leave as a free agent in the summer.

He should have plenty of options to consider if that is the case, with several Premier League clubs reported to be keen.

Arsenal have seen Aaron Ramsey linked with an imminent exit, Emre Can is yet to pen a new deal at Liverpool and Mousa Dembele has cast doubt over his future at Tottenham.

Those situations could leave all three clubs in the market for reinforcements this summer, with Meyer an intriguing option for the present and future.
