Klopp ready to trigger Timo Werner’s £50m release clause
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly set his sights on signing compatriot Timo Werner in the summer, with the RB Leipzig striker available for £50million due to a release clause in his contract.
The Premier League leaders have had three relatively quiet transfer windows, mainly signing youngsters and filling squad gaps, though did bring in Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg in a cut-price £7.25m deal in January.
But they might be about to delve into the coffers once more, with Sport Bild reporting that Klopp has greenlit a summer move for Werner.
The Liverpool boss is keen to bring in more firepower in the summer and wants a player who can provide cover and competition across the frontline.
Werner is a versatile attacker and can play anywhere in the attack, though has operated almost exclusively through the middle for Leipzig this season en route to netting 20 goals in 21 Bundesliga appearances.
He has also laid on six assists for his teammates, as well as netting three times in the Champions League, and will test himself against Premier League opposition in the last-16 against Spurs.
A host of European giants have been keeping tabs on Werner, including Juventus, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, but Liverpool are ready to steal a march on them all.
According to Bild, Werner has a release clause in the new contract he signed that allows him to leave for just €60million (£50m) in the summer and he would be eager to link up with Klopp at Anfield.
Werner was asked about his future recently and told Kicker: "I can generally imagine playing abroad one day, although I don’t have any specific club where I want to be. I am open for everything.
"I was in America for a holiday recently and English football was on all the time. That’s an exclamation mark for the Premier League. But there are also big, famous clubs and it would certainly be fun playing there."
