Liverpool FC ambassador Gary McAllister visited the Berlin Wall Memorial on Friday to learn about the history of the area and pay his respects to those who lost their lives as a consequence of the East German border regime.

He was joined by LFC legend Patrik Berger for a tour of the site, guided by Mr Klausmeier, the director of the Berlin Wall Foundation, before the pair laid a floral tribute on behalf of the club at the Window of Remembrance.

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division and contains the last remaining piece of the wall with a permanent exhibition of the former border strip.

The Window of Remembrance, a poignant display of names and photographs, commemorates 139 people who died at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989.

McAllister said: "It's been a moving, but fascinating afternoon. Learning about the history of the wall and the events of post-war Berlin has been eye-opening.

"It was quite emotional to visit the Window of Remembrance and see the photographs of the people who lost their lives here. We couldn't visit Berlin and not come to such an important place."
