50 Men Who Made LFC: Joe Fagan
English football's original treble-winning manager and the man widely credited with creating Anfield's much-fabled Boot Room, Joe Fagan played a pivotal part in Liverpool's unforgettable reign of success during the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
A born and bred Scouser who spent the majority of his playing career with Manchester City, he joined the Liverpool coaching staff in 1958, initially taking charge of the club’s reserve team.
With a knack for nurturing the talents of precocious youngsters, he quickly became part of Bill Shankly’s trusted inner circle and soon worked his way up the backroom ranks, rising to second in command when Bob Paisley took charge, before eventually stepping into the managerial seat himself.
Unassuming, down to earth, and never one to court publicity, Fagan embodied the Liverpool Way.
He celebrated his first season at the helm with an unprecedented triple trophy haul, capped by an incredible night in Rome when he became the then-oldest manager to win the European Cup.
