Brewster scores in England shootout win
Rhian Brewster scored in the shootout as England defeated Japan 5-3 on penalties in the last 16 of the U17 World Cup on Tuesday.
Liverpool striker Brewster, who played the full game in Kolkata, kept his cool to convert the first spot-kick and put the Young Lions on their way to victory following a tense 0-0 draw across the 90 minutes.
England enjoyed the better of the match, with Brewster going close to breaking the deadlock midway through the first half when he smashed a powerful effort off the outside of the post.
Japan managed to take the tie to penalties, but Steve Cooper’s team dispatched all five of their spot-kicks and deservedly progressed to the quarter-finals, where they will face the USA.
