Gerrard: Let's go for a win
Steven Gerrard declared himself pleased with England's performance in their opening Euro 2012 fixture against France on Monday night and the skipper challenged his teammates to build on a solid performance in Donetsk.
Gerrard lead by example on 30 minutes when he launched a pin-point, 30-yard cross into the French penalty area where Joleon Lescott was poised to nod past Hugo Lloris and give the Three Lions a dream start to their Euro campaign.
Manchester City's Samir Nasri pegged them back within 10 minutes of play, expertly firing past Joe Hart to level proceedings at the Donbass Arena.
But Liverpool's No.8 insisted he would have settled for a point prior to kick-off.
"We would have been delighted with a win but France have got fantastic players," said Gerrard. "I thought we caused them as many problems as they caused us so we're satisfied with the performance.
"But we said before the game that win, lose or draw we wouldn't get carried away and that this was just a platform.
"It's great to get off the mark points-wise. Now we need to follow it up with a win and try to get four points out of two games..
"This is only a good point if we go on to get the points we need to get out of this group. We will analyse this game - what we've done right and what we've done wrong - and then we'll go into the Sweden game hopefully all recovered. There's still loads of hard work to do."
