Gerrard scoops Goal of the Month award
Steven Gerrard's perfectly-placed free-kick past FC Basel in the Champions League has been voted by fans as Liverpool's Goal of the Month for December, in association with EA SPORTS.
With the Reds trailing to the Swiss champions in a crucial European contest, the captain stepped up to delightfully curl the unstoppable set-piece into the top corner and equalise at Anfield.
Though the brilliant strike was not ultimately enough to prevent elimination from the tournament, it received 44 per cent of the nominations in our online supporters' poll to take the accolade.
Gerrard therefore earns his second Goal of the Month award of the season, seeing off competition from fellow midfielder Adam Lallana, who was the nearest rival with two entries.
The No.20's silky dribble and finish against Swansea City - teed up by a fine Philippe Coutinho flick - took 20 per cent, while his thunderous leveller at Leicester City was in third place.
Completing the top five in the results, whittled down from a 10-goal shortlist, was Raheem Sterling's header at the end of a team move at Bournemouth and Coutinho's opener at home to Arsenal.
