Philippe Coutinho has the tools to become 'an outstanding player' at Anfield, according to Terry McDermott – who fully understands the task at hand for the Liverpool No.10.

McDermott was a relentless, box-to-box midfielder for the Reds, providing a regular source of goals and contributing to 10 major trophies during his eight stellar years with the club.

It is little surprise then that his eye is drawn to Coutinho when watching the current team, with the Brazilian a stand-out performer throughout the past two months.

Given licence to concern opposition defences with his creativity from a central attacking role, the 22-year-old has grasped the mantle, developing into a focal point for Brendan Rodgers.

Encouragingly, McDermott believes there is only more to come from the man that arrived on Merseyside from Inter Milan two years ago this week.

Speaking on 'Anfield 360 - Added Time', the 63-year-old said: "He is improving. He can do everything. The one thing lacking is goals - he needs to score more goals.

"But apart from that, he's got everything. He's got an engine, he's quick and he goes past people. He can only get better and I think he will get better.

"He is only 22 and he will get better. If he does, you've got a real player on your hands. He is going to be an outstanding player for many years for Liverpool."
