There was a typically humble response from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after he was presented with a special merit award by the PFA on Sunday night.

The midfielder was in London to attend the association's annual awards ceremony and collected his individual honour alongside former England teammate Frank Lampard.

It arrives as recognition for Gerrard's remarkable 17-year Anfield adventure before the No.8 bids farewell to the Reds and joins LA Galaxy in the summer.

"I'm obviously pleased," he said. "Every time you get an individual award and get rewarded for the job you're doing, you're always happy. I'm really pleased."

The Englishman has claimed seven major trophies with Liverpool, making 706 appearances and notching 183 goals for the club to date.

Asked for the key factors in enjoying such a lengthy and successful career in football, Gerrard directed praise to those around him.

The skipper replied: "First and foremost, it's hard work and sacrifice. You need a bit of luck along the way as well. And you need to be surrounded by good players and good staff.

"You need to be at a club that is hungry for success. It has been a privilege to represent Liverpool for so long and have some of the highlights of my career and share them with some wonderful people."
