Steven Gerrard hailed Philippe Coutinho as 'the next big thing' at Liverpool's Players' Awards, expressing his belief that the 22-year-old can lead the club to a bright future.

The Brazilian was named Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year during Tuesday evening's event at the Echo Arena, and also picked up gongs for the Performance of the Year and Goal of the Year.

Gerrard, meanwhile, saw his contribution over a 17-year spell in the first team marked ahead of his move to LA Galaxy this summer.

Rather than offering platitudes, however, the captain used his acceptance speech for the Outstanding Achievement Award to laud Coutinho.

"I'm bored of speaking about myself, so I want to pay tribute to Philippe tonight," he said.

"I think this is his night. He's cleaned up tonight on all of the awards and deservedly so, it's an absolute privilege to share a dressing room with him.

"He's the next big thing, for me, I hope he stays here for a long time and he can help win us some more trophies."

Gerrard also called for his colleagues to continue giving their everything for the red shirt after he has departed.

"From all the Liverpool players that are here and the ones that will be here in the future, you just want them to carry on all the club values," he added.

"That's to work as hard as you can for the badge and every time you put the shirt on give everything you've got."
