Jürgen Klopp picked out 66-1 chance Vics Canvas in the Grand National sweepstake at Melwood – but will only find out how his horse fared after today's training session.

The Liverpool squad will be out preparing for Sunday’s home clash with Stoke City when the world-famous steeplechase gets underway at Aintree racecourse this afternoon.

Klopp knew a little about the event before moving to Merseyside but needed some help from James Milner to get a sense of whether he might be on to a winner.

He said: “I only saw Milly’s face when I grabbed the paper! I thought ‘Is it good?’ Oh, no. Sorry, Vics Canvas!

“I am excited a little bit and we will see – maybe Milly will come and give me some money or maybe it was not the best choice. It is how it is.

“I heard about this race before but had no idea it is next to Liverpool, to be honest. It seems to be a big thing and something special.

“I can’t say too much about it but if it’s interesting and we can have a look at it after training, I will ask Milly how my horse was going.”
