Anfield's very own ‘Supersub’, David Fairclough, started in the 1978 European Cup final for Liverpool, on a night when Kenny Dalglish’s goal was enough to beat Bruges 1-0. The man from Cantril Farm pens this message.

“I want to say good luck to all the lads in Basel. It’s been a little while since we won our last European trophy, so let’s make it a successful night on Wednesday and let’s put another European trophy in our cabinet.

“This has been a special year in many ways. We have faced three big opponents in the Europa League and have beaten them all. The fans could feel we had the potential to go all the way to the final.

“Games against Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Villarreal were very special. Of course, the Anfield night against Dortmund reminded me a little bit of that incredible night against Saint-Etienne back in 1977.

“I am very fortunate that the Saint-Etienne game is still remembered very fondly to this day and nights like the one against Dortmund don’t happen year-in, year-out. It was a massive night for Liverpool Football Club and people have likened it to previous nights.

“It was special and I hope we are in for another very special night in our history on Wednesday night.”
