Liverpool and Arsenal were deadlocked at one goal apiece deep into injury time.

The Reds had the upper hand over Premier League champions Arsenal for much of this hard-fought affair at Anfield in late November 2004.

Xabi Alonso's opening goal - a fine, high effort from Steven Gerrard's perfectly-weighted pass - shortly before the interval was just reward for Rafa Benitez's side's front-foot approach.

The Gunners, title holders having gone the entire previous season unbeaten, showed their class when Patrick Vieira applied a deft finishing touch to a trademark passing move involving Thierry Henry and Robert Pires.

It looked like Liverpool would have to settle for a point - until Neil Mellor intervened, that is. Arsenal failed to deal with Chris Kirkland's long kick and Mellor seized on the loose ball to arc a perfect half-volley into the bottom corner of the Kop net from all of 30 yards.

Cue Anfield pandemonium.
