At the age of 23, Emre Can is the youngest of the senior midfield players who have been called upon by Liverpool this season.

And for that reason, Molby believes he still has some way to go in terms of his development.

However, the former Reds midfielder expects the German to have a say in the big fixtures that remain this season, as evidenced by his recent performance at Old Trafford.

"Emre Can is still relatively young, alhough he’s played a lot of football because physically he was ready at an early age. He still needs to work on certain things but the qualities are there for everyone to see. Before his injury, he was having a very impressive spell, when he was getting among the goals and it looked like he was enjoying getting forward.

"I wasn’t surprised that he was playing at Old Trafford, you needed battlers. We weren’t playing well enough to think we were going to go there and totally dominate and run all over them – we knew we also had to take care of their qualities.

"Chelsea are coming up, you look at their midfield and the battle you’ll have there, Spurs are coming to Anfield, [with] Dembele and Wanyama – they’re the kind of games that Emre Can will play. There’ll be other games where you feel you might be able to get a few goals and we need more attack-minded players who are bit quicker with the ball. He might have to miss out on a few of them."
