The Brazilian took the captain’s armband for the final match of Champions League Group E and marked the occasion with a hat-trick under the Anfield floodlights.
It began with a spot-kick on just four minutes, before he finished a sublime team move featuring Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah as the Reds set about putting seven past Spartak Moscow.
Having led 3-0 at the interval, Jürgen Klopp’s side ensured their passage to the knockout stages with four more goals in the second half – including a treble-completing finish from Coutinho at the Kop end.
