Liverpool have made an emergency loan bid for QPR defender Steven Caulker.

Caulker is currently on loan at Southampton until the end of the season, but this would be cancelled if a deal can be arranged to bring him to Anfield for the next six months.

Jürgen Klopp has been desperate to add numbers, targeting Bundesliga centre-halves Neven Subotic and Joel Matip, but those efforts have been blocked.

A short-term measure is all that is available and Caulker could step in until Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren are fully recovered from injury.

It is not the first time 24-year-old Caulker has been targeted by Liverpool as he was also wanted by former manager Brendan Rodgers.

He was considered a fine prospect when at Spurs and Cardiff, but lost his way at Loftus Road and moved to St Mary’s in the hope of reviving his career.

The unlikely opportunity to work under Klopp at Anfield would undoubtedly appeal to the England defender, who has made one senior international appearance and is desperate for a fresh start.
