Steven Gerrard eyeing Reds coaching role
Steven Gerrard has opened the door for a return to Anfield after deciding to turn down the chance to manage MK Dons.
The Liverpool legend was in serious talks with the League One club to succeed sacked Karl Robinson.
But he has decided to look elsewhere and could be in line for a coaching role at his former club, one he could combine with a position in the new-look England set-up.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has always said he would welcome Gerrard back and it is understood that the club are ready to hold informal talks about their star player returning.
But with the Reds immersed in a title fight over the busy Christmas period, the German coach may wait until after the holiday season to have more formal talks.
It seems likely the club would welcome him into a role within their much-admired academy, which would dovetail nicely with any position offered by the FA.
Despite being impressed by the vision of Dons chairman Pete Winkleman, the former England skipper does not want to rush into such an important decision over his future, after recently returning from a spell playing in the States.
Instead he will take time to explore further offers which have already piled up after he declined the chance to extend his playing career in America.
Among those offers could be a duel role at Anfield and within the coaching set up at the FA, as part of the new team which will be assembled when Gareth Southgate is formally offered the manager’s job on a full time basis.
It is understood the FA want talks with both Gerrard and Frank Lampard about joining the wider coaching structure connected to the full international side, with Technical Director Dan Ashworth keen to get them on board.
They will wait though, until Southgate is officially appointed and offers blessing to the move, though it is thought he would be keen to introduce some fresh blood into the setup. Those talks are likely to take place by the end of the year.
Gerrard has also had offers to return to playing, and also has been approached over other coaching roles, but it seems he is now happy to take his time and ensure he makes the right decision for his family, who are happily based on Merseyside.
