RB Leipzig chief opens door to Timo Werner exit
Liverpool and Bayern Munich target Timo Werner has told RB Leipzig that he will not sign a new contract as the German side consider cashing in this summer.
The 23-year-old netted again on Saturday – his third goal in his last four Bundesliga outings, while he also has as many assists to boot – in Leipzig’s 2-0 win over Wolfsburg, taking his tally for the season to 14.
Speaking at half-time in the match, the club’s chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff admitted that Werner may be playing his final games for Leipzig.
‘It’s well known that we want to extend with him, but he’s signalled to us that he does not want to sign a new contract,’ Mintzlaff told Sky Sports.
‘We need to see what’s right for us and for Timo.’
With Werner out of contract in the summer of 2020, Leipzig are believed to be ready to sell the Germany international rather than risk losing him for nothing in a year’s time.
Bayern and Liverpool, as well as Borussia Dortmund, have been tracking Werner and a price tag of £36m has been mooted.
Leipzig, though, will hope that they can incite a bidding war for the striker, while they would rather sell abroad than help strengthen a domestic rival.
Werner ticks a number of boxes for Liverpool, capable of playing across the frontline and blessed with ferocious speed, while he previously admitted that he watched a lot of Liverpool when he was growing up and would jump at the chance to work with compatriot Jurgen Klopp.
