Honours: FA Cup (2022)
Thiago Alcantara brought his wealth of experience at the elite level of European football to Liverpool when he signed a long-term deal in September 2020.
The Spain international completed a move from FC Bayern Munich, with whom he’d lifted the Champions League the previous month to seal a 2019-20 treble with the German giants.
Born to Brazilian parents in Italy, and the son of 1994 World Cup winner Mazinho, Thiago spent much of his childhood in Spain and would join FC Barcelona’s La Masia academy.
The midfielder progressed through the ranks and earned a senior debut for the La Liga club under Pep Guardiola in 2009 before becoming a regular in the XI in the years that followed.
He helped Spain U21s win back-to-back U21 European Championships in 2011 and 2013 – scoring a hat-trick in the latter final – and then followed Guardiola to Bayern in 2013.
Thiago won the Bundesliga in each of the seven seasons he spent in Munich, as well as four German cups and the FIFA Club World Cup, capping off his spell by playing an influential role as Bayern won the European Cup in August 2020.
Within weeks of that triumph, he embarked on a fresh challenge by moving to Anfield, agreeing a long-term contract with Jürgen Klopp’s champions.
“When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more,” he told Liverpoolfc.com upon his arrival.
“I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible. It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.”
Thiago made his debut two days after completing his transfer to Liverpool, playing the full second half at Stamford Bridge in a 2-0 win over Chelsea. A knee injury sustained in the Merseyside derby in October interrupted his first season with the club but, after two-and-a-half months out, he returned to action at the turn of the year.
